Speaker Series
Join our "Garden of Speakers" at Metropolitan Gardens. LAS has teamed up with Catholic Charities of Reno to provide senior education and outreach for the residents of Metropolitan Gardens, an apartment complex for Seniors just south of UNR. Residents of the Gardens are all over 60 (some even in their 90’s). Most have no transportation and no way to travel far from the Gardens. They have been looking for some kind of intellectual stimulation beyond just monthly bingo, so LAS is providing it! Alan Gubanich has already presented two talks on “Birds of Nevada,” followed by Diane McAllister, who showed many of her fabulous photos and talked about "The Hawks Who Stole My Summer." Carl Lackey then recently told the residents how NDOW (Nevada Department of Wildlife) handles human-bear conflicts. The response has been remarkable and the program has taken off. The residents are inquisitive, actively participate with the speakers, and are just plain fun to be with. Many more engaging presentations are scheduled--if you want to join in, these fun talks can be found on our calendar! LAS would love to have you participate--maybe even offer a presentation yourself some day on a topic you think the Seniors would enjoy. They all say they want to learn more about Nevada and Reno, since most have moved here from out of state. Come join us during one of the talks and meet the folks. Contact Alan Gubanich if you want more information. Metropolitan Gardens is located at 325 East 7th Street, between Record Street and Evans, just south of the UNR campus and on the south side of I-80.
