Our bird of the month for May is the American Avocet. Avocets are a shorebird know for their impressive height and bright plumage. They live on the coasts but migrate into the Great Basin during summer breeding season. They are often seen near bodies of water, walking on the shore, but can swim and dabble just like ducks. Avocets make a loud "Kweep-kweep," call.
Avocets have migrated to our area and are commonly seen at parks with a body of water. These include Sparks Marina, Swan Lake, Virginia Lake and any of the wetlands seen along roadways such as Veteran's Parkway.
