Great Backyard Bird Count
Bird watchers around the world take part February 14-17, 2020
How to get started: https://gbbc.birdcount.org/get-started/
New York, NY, Ithaca, NY, and Port Rowan, ON—Show the wild birds some love by taking part in the 23rd Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). This year’s count begins on Valentine's Day, Friday, February 14, and continues through Monday, February 17. Volunteers from around the world count the birds they see for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count, and then enter their checklists at birdcount.org.
National Audubon's landmark
Birds and Climate Change study.
As the climate changes, so will the places birds need. Audubon scientists took advantage of 140 million observations, recorded by birders and scientists, to describe where 604 North American bird species live today—an area known as their “range.” They then used the latest climate models to project how each species’s range will shift as climate change and other human impacts advance across the continent.
The results are clear: Birds will be forced to relocate to find favorable homes. And they may not survive.

A BIG THANKS TO VORTEX OPTICS
Lahontan Audubon Society owes a huge thank you to Vortex Optics, who each year, for the last 7-plus years, have repaired a box full of well-used (some damaged) LAS binoculars used by the 500 or so elementary school children who attended the LAS field trips at Washoe Lake State Park. Vortex has never charged LAS a penny for this terrific service and has even paid return shipping back to us. We encourage anyone who may be looking for binoculars to check out Vortex Optics. They have a great variety of binoculars in a wide price range and provide amazing service.
Thanks so much, Vortex.
