LAS NEEDS OFFICERS AND COMMITTEE CHAIRS/MEMBERS.  Join us in helping to continue to build LAS as a strong organization for birds, education, and conservation.

LAS Needs a New Vice President
Although we elected a new Vice President for 2016-2017 this May, Brian Steger, recently elected, and with great regret, had to step down in early June to accept a job in San Jose. A big part of the VP job is to arrange program speakers for our eight monthly meetings. Alan Gubanich, who served many many (okay one more many) years as LAS’s VP, stepped up to arrange Programs  in June 2015 after the death of our then VP, Nancy Peppin. Alan did a terrific job, and has arranged speakers for LAS Programs through June of 2017. Thank you so much Alan.

So a big part of the job VP for 2016 to 2017 is already in place, but, we will need a new Vice President to step in if our President is not available. Please consider stepping up to serve as VP. Email our current President Jacque Lowery at nevadabird@charter.net if you are interested.
LAS needs a New Communications Chair and Other Communications Volunteers
The LAS Communications Chair oversees the LAS email notification list, the LAS website and Facebook page, and publicity for LAS and for LAS special events. Our current Communications Chair is stepping down in July. We would like to get a new Communications Chairperson in place as soon as possible.

As LAS has grown, the responsibilities for communications have expanded. We expect to divide the Communications Committee into three or four sub-committees. We need volunteers to head up some of the sub-committees and also help out with communications duties described below.

We need a volunteer to take over the LAS email notification list, which is used to remind members about field trips, meetings, events, and other activities.

We need volunteers to assist with publicity for LAS events and functions, and to coordinate spokespeople for LAS when the media requests comment. Duties would include coordinating with newspaper columnists for the local newspapers and with local television and radio reporters to publicize our Bird Identification Classes, LAS educational events, and other LAS activities and special events.

Please, if you are interested in chairing the Communications Committee, heading up a sub-committee, or volunteering for specific jobs on a subcommittee, contact Kathy Oakes at oakesy@sbcglobal.net.
Other Volunteer Opportunities
Education – If you'd like to volunteer to be on our Education Committee, please click here for more information.  New Education Committee Co-Chairs are Linda Valle and Michal Goddard.

Hospitality - Our Hospitality Committee provides snacks for LAS’s program meetings. We welcome volunteers to help with setting up for the pre-meeting social half hour. If you are interested, please contact our current Hospitality Chairs Dave and Patty Sawyer at sawyerpd@charter.net.

Fundraising/Fall Fund Drive - We need one or more volunteers to coordinate the LAS Fall Fund Drive for 2016 and assist with mailing the Fund Drive solicitation, collating and tracking donations, and sending out thank you notes. We are always looking for volunteers with innovative ideas for other fundraising events or campaigns throughout the year. If you are interested, please contact Jacque Lowery nevadabird@charter.net.

Field Trips - Be a field trip leader for LAS to a local birding spot of your choice. Most trips are half-day trips in our area, but all-day field trips and even two-day field trips are possible. OR volunteer to assist a field trip leader on one or more field trips to register participants, coordinate the group, and assist with questions from trip participants. OR help our Field Trip Chair to coordinate with field trip leaders to get field trip reports to post on our website. If you are interested, contact Jasmine Kleiber, nevadabirder@gmail.com.

Truckee Meadows Bird ID Classes - We hold our Bird ID Classes once a week for five weeks each spring. We are always looking for presenters or co-presenters for one or more of the series of classes (introduction to birding, backyard birds, mountain birds, wetland birds, raptors, or the field trip). We also need a coordinator for the Bird Classes, as Jane Burnham, who has done a terrific job for several years, plans to step down.  If you are interested in serving as Coordinator for the classes, contact Jane Burnham, janefrancesbrnham@gmail.com.  We also need help with publicity, other administrative needs, or to help with set-up and registration at one or more classes.

Volunteer Coordinator - We need someone with great organizations skills to compile information on volunteers and connect them to the appropriate Committee Chair or Board member. The Volunteer Coordinator would maintain a database of volunteers, their contact information, and volunteer interests. If you want to volunteer for this rewarding position, please contact Jacque Lowery, nevadabird@charter.net.
