ACTIVITIES

Join LAS to get announcements about our chapter's upcoming activities or contact us to join our email list!  Most of our activities are free and open to the public, but some events, like our field trips, fill up quickly and our members receive the earlybird announcements and opportunities to register first.

Field Trips - Come Birding With Us!

Field trips are free to Lahontan Audubon members and non-members unless otherwise noted.  We encourage birders of all skill levels to participate. Trips are subject to change or cancellation so please pre-register with field trip leaders with your contact information so they can reach you in the event the trip does change and/or is cancelled. Remember to dress accordingly as the weather can be very unpredictable in Nevada, and please bring a snack and lots of water, and binoculars if you have them!   Our trip registrations are limited so that everyone has a good chance to see the birds, but members get the earlybird registration links in their email.

MEETINGS & CLASSES

BIRDS OF THE TRUCKEE MEADOWS CLASSES

The popular Birds of the Truckee Meadows bird identification classes are an excellent opportunity for new birders to learn from some of the area’s experts and a great refresher for seasoned birders.  These classes are offered in the spring.

Learn how to tell a kestrel from a buteo, a sparrow from a jay, AND WHAT THE HECK ARE THE BIRDS IN THAT PHOTO?

All our Bird Class teachers are accomplished birders and a friendly group of volunteers.

ADULT WORKSHOPS

Throughout the year we usually offer several workshops for the public in addition to our popular Birds of the Truckee Meadows classes. Our growing collection of bird taxidermy mounts allows us to offer programs geared to specific groups of birds.  Many of these free talks are given at the Galena Creek Visitor Center off Mount Rose Highway.  Examples include:

  • How to Identify Hawks of Nevada
  • How to Identify Owls of Nevada
  • Winter Birds of the Galena Forest
  • Summer Birds of the Galena Forest

monthly member meetings

Our chapter offers meetups on the fourth Tuesday of most months (with a break in the summer and in December).  We meet at the Moana Nursery Landscape Center, located at 1100 W. Moana Lane in Reno.  The Landscape Center is the building across the parking lot from the store.  Doors open at 6:30 pm for light refreshments and to meet friends.  General chapter announcements and a presentation begin at 7:00 pm.  Presentations are varied and may include topics about ongoing avian research, bird care,  bird conservation, or really anything interesting about the bird world.  If you have a topic that you would like to share with us, please contact our Vice-President, who is the director of our meeting programs or email us!
