VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Lahontan Audubon Society relies on volunteers to accomplish our mission and engage the community in educational and conservation programs for birds and other wildlife. Thank you, LAS volunteers!

Volunteering is one of the most rewarding ways to help birds and wildlife, gain experience, and to make new friends.  LAS provides many opportunities to give back to wildlife at all different levels within the organization​.

Check out our current list of committees and open volunteer positions below. If you or someone you know might be a good fit, please contact us or fill out the volunteer interest form. 

We are flexible and willing to find the best fit for each person based on their interests and skills. We also always welcome new ideas for programs and opportunities to reach new and existing members.
​Programs and Activities Committee
  • Position Descriptions:
    • Committee Members - Help us to find presenters for our membership meetings, coordinate locations, and plan programming for special events for our membership.
    • Presenters - We are looking for people who are interested in providing ~1 hour presentations on a variety of topics focused on wildlife, conservation, and birding adventures.

​Audit Committee
  • Position Descriptions:
    • Auditors - We are looking for folks with financial experience who can help us to conduct internal audits on LAS financial records to ensure compliance with bylaws and relevant state and federal regulations.

​Communications Committee
  • Position Descriptions:
    • Committee Chair - The chair oversees communications between various mediums including email, social media, and the website to ensure consistent messaging. This person will coordinate with the newsletter editor, webmaster, social media coordinator, and staff.   
    • Newsletter Editor - Our quarterly newsletter, The Pelican, consists of articles about birding, conservation, and relevant events in northwestern Nevada. The editor writes, recruits, and reviews articles quarterly and works with the webmaster and staff to distribute to our members.
    • Webmaster - The webmaster oversees updates to the LAS website using Weebly. Other volunteers and staff will help develop content for the website, while the webmaster ensures a coordinated aesthetic throughout.
    • Social Media Coordinator - LAS uses social media (Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube) to inform our current members and engage new audiences. We are always looking for assistance in providing content and helping us manage communications through these channels.

Conservation Committee
  • Position Descriptions:
    • Committee Chair/Members: Members of this committee will keep apprised of conservation issues and legislation impacting birds and habitat in northwestern Nevada. The committee provides recommendations to the board on actions and projects that will support conservation.

Education Committee
  • Position Descriptions:
    • Committee Chair/Members: Help us coordinate education programs for schools, community groups, and special events. Committee members may also help to recruit and train education volunteers.
    • Virtual Volunteers: We are exploring the possibility of offering virtual programming to local schools and need volunteers who would be comfortable presenting using Zoom or other web-based platforms.
    • School Field Trip Volunteers: School Field Trips typically take place at Washoe Lake State Park or other local birding hotspots. Leaders help identify birds and other flora/fauna, teach students to use binoculars, scopes, microscopes, and field guides.
    • Classroom/Community Group Presenters: Classroom/Community Group volunteers give ~1 hour presentations focused on different birding topics to school groups or other community organizations (e.g. scout groups, senior living facilities, etc.).
    • Community Event Volunteers: These volunteers will help us with tabling at special events to help spread the word about LAS and birding.

Field Trip Committee
  • Position Descriptions:
    • Committee Chair/Members: Help us to coordinate field trips, and recruit and train leaders.
    • Leaders/Assistant Leaders: We are always looking for volunteers to lead our birding field trips. You do not need to be an expert birder, just have an interest in sharing your love of birds. Leaders can design their own field trips, including the location, time, duration, and number of participants.

Fundraising and Membership Committee
  • Position Descriptions:
    • Committee Chair/Members - Committee members help plan fundraising events, our annual Fall Fund Drive, and build our base of supporters. This committee also works to maintain our membership and donor records and oversees the stewardship of our supporters.

Professional Services
  • CPA - We are looking for a CPA who is willing to donate their services to help us with our annual tax filing and/or Audit Committee. If you are interested in helping or know someone who may be interested, please contact us.
  • Photographers - We can always use some great photos of birds, habitats, and our field trips and events. If you are a photographer and are interested in having your work featured on our website and social media, please submit your photos for our monthly photography contest or contact us to share a larger gallery.
