Dear Friends of Lahontan Audubon Society,

This year has been the most challenging for us, our environment and its wildlife. Due to the pandemic we have had to cancel all of our programs and outreach efforts since March, including field trips, membership meetings and school visits. As part of adapting to the pandemic and its social distancing guidelines, we decided to send out this email announcement in addition to our main announcement arriving in your mailbox momentarily.

As the pandemic continues, sage-grouse and other wildlife are threatened by wildfires throughout the western states, and while we have made strides in their protection, more must be done to save this iconic symbol of the American West. None of us knows what the next year will look like, but I can tell you that your Lahontan Audubon Society (LAS) is making every effort it can to continue and expand our mission to educate children and adults, fostering an appreciation and awareness of birds and their habitats and the threats they are facing. To that end, here are some of the activities and projects we hope to promote and expand with your help over the next year:

  • Begin a quarterly online newsletter with contributions by you, our members and friends, highlighting the birds and activities related to wildlife and the outdoors in our community.
  • Produce a virtual online monthly membership program until such time that we can resume in person monthly meetings.
  • Develop educational programs about local birds and Nevada wildlife for our schools to use as part of their virtual, on-line education curriculum.
  • Create an urban birding guide for Reno and Sparks highlighting easily accessible parks via the local RTC bus system for individuals to safely and independently watch birds.
  • Continue our efforts with the National Audubon Society’s Saline Lakes Committee to promote and highlight areas such as the Lahontan Valley wetlands and their importance to migrating and resident birds.
  • Work with the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF) to restore the wetlands at the Truckee Meadows Nature Study Area and develop an environmental education facility for the community to enjoy.
  • Resume our field trip program with new COVID-19 safety guidelines in place to ensure a safe birding experience for all participants.
  • LAS initiated Northern Nevada’s first Christmas Bird Count over 50 years ago and we hope to keep the tradition going with your participation and support.

As you can see, LAS is not sitting still during these challenging times we all face with COVID-19, but we need your help to keep us going strong. Your donations and support will help us bring these and other new programs and projects to our community.

Click here to make your donation online via our website. As a member, you will also be receiving a paper copy of this letter in your mail. If you would like to opt out of future paper mailings, please send us an email here. For more information please visit our website or email us at contact@NevadaAudubon.org. Thank you and please stay safe.

Sincerely,

David Jickling, President,
