Fall was in the air with a cool morning but at the end it was in the 70s F. The Friday 10-1 was to Empire Ranch, which is east of Carson City and south of HWY 50 and runs along the Carson River. It was slow at the beginning except for the numerous WC SPARROWS. We heard a MARSH WREN at the first pond and the usual large flock of CANADA GEESE on the golf course. At the south end of the golf course, we found BUSHTITS, RED-TAILED HAWKS, and BEWICKS WRENS. Continuing south we found more WC Sparrows, a GREAT BLUE HERON perched in a tree, AMERICAN KESTRELS, and COOPERS HAWKS. On the way back we found an immature NO. GOSHAWK, a BLACK PHOEBE, a female WOOD DUCK, and an immature RED-SHOULDERED HAWK. I found an adult RS Hawk perched on a power line as I was leaving the park. We ended the walk with 38 species, which was not bad with such a slow start.
