Red-tailed Hawk: Olivia Sembach

People new to birding, and even some long-time birders, often have difficulty identifying hawks in the field. Join long-time LAS member Alan Gubanich for an evening presentation on how to identify the up to seventeen species that can be seen in our area. Alan will use a PowerPoint presentation to guide you through the process of separating one hawk from another. Keep your field guide beside you while you watch! Feel free to bring the whole family!

About Alan:
Alan is an emeritus faculty member at the University of Nevada, Reno where he was a member of the Biology Department for 35 years (1970-2005). He taught classes in Ornithology, General Biology, Field Studies and several other disciplines. He is Past- Vice-President of the local Lahontan Audubon Society (LAS) and Chair of their Education Committee, a Board Member of the Great Basin Institute (GBI), and a former Board Member of the Great Basin Bird Observatory (GBBO.) He banded birds for over 11 years in the Truckee Meadows as part of a nation-wide population study. He is co-editor with Karen Kish of A Birding Guide to Reno and Beyond, 2nd edition. He has led outdoor weekend trips and one-day excursions (natural history, cultural history, birding, botanizing) in both Nevada and California through the Workforce Development and Continuing Education (WDCE) Department of Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) and has traveled to and/or organized tours to various locations in North, Central and South America, Europe, Japan, Africa and Hawaii. He and his wife now regularly spend quality time with their grandtwins, Rita and Jackson, at least once a week.
