Our bird for this month is the Yellow-Rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata). Warblers are a group of small songbirds, often known for their distinctive colors. The Yellow-Rumped Warbler is easily recognized with gray and black feathers covering its body but with bright yellow patches under its wings, on its neck and its rump. Yellow-Rumped Warblers are often seen gleaning morsels from small trees and shrubs.
Yellow-Rumped Warblers enjoy eating seeds, so putting out seed feeders is a great way to attract them to your backyard. Right now these warblers are a common sight in our parks, with Rancho San Rafael, Idlewild Park and Oxbow Nature Area being particular hot spots.
