On Monday May 23rd, Lahontan Audubon Society hosted its first American Sign Language (ASL) Bird Walk, the first of three for this year. As this walk was designed to include deaf and hard-of-hearing folks, two scopes were made available so everyone could have a chance to look at the birds. Our participants included deaf individuals, as well as individuals practicing their ASL skills. As always, Virginia Lake presented plenty of diverse birds including waterfowl, songbirds and even a nesting pair of crows. In addition to having birds pointed out to them, our participants also enjoyed learning fun facts about birds, such as how Mute Swans mate for life. We also noticed several Red-eared Slider turtles swimming or basking in the sun. To see the full species list, read our field trip report below: We will be hosting two more ASL walks this summer.
